Cold Chain Innovation Hub logo

Cold Chain Innovation Hub

UNIDO with the Philippines' Department of Environment and Natural ResourcesFunded by the Global Environment FacilityPhilippines

The official platform for the Global Partnership for Improving the Food Cold Chain in the Philippines. The project works to identify, develop and stimulate low-carbon, energy-efficient refrigeration technologies and business practices across the Philippine food cold chain, while increasing food safety and security — through policy and regulatory assessment, capacity building on climate-friendly alternatives, and technology transfer between stakeholders. The physical hub is hosted by the Philippines' Technical Education and Skills Development Authority at its Regional Training Center in Metro Manila.

Our roleProject partner, as shecco.

  • Research report evaluating the Philippines' food cold chain (June 2020)
  • Recommendation report for the Philippines' commercial food retail sector (December 2021)
  • Cold chain policy paper (December 2022)

LIFE FRONT

European UnionLIFE Climate Action programmeEuropeJune 2017 – June 2020

LIFE FRONT set out to remove the barriers posed by standards to flammable refrigerants in refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pump applications. By improving system design to address flammability risk, it worked to widen the uptake of climate-friendly alternatives to fluorinated gases — supporting EU and international standardisation, building technical capacity among European equipment manufacturers, and strengthening Europe's competitiveness in RACHP equipment using non-fluorinated refrigerants.

Our roleProject leader, as shecco — overall project management plus the communication and dissemination work, and lead on the literature review and market study on standards and technology for flammable refrigerants. Delivered with five partners: AHT, ait-deutschland, ECOS, HEAT and NIBE.

  • 1,069,200 tCO₂eq avoided by 2023
  • 9,453 tHFC avoided by 2023
  • +36% hydrocarbon market penetration for heat pumps and plug-in commercial refrigeration by 2023
  • +13% hydrocarbon market penetration for split air conditioning and remote commercial refrigeration by 2023

SuperSmart

European UnionHorizon 2020EuropeLaunched February 2016

SuperSmart worked to make European supermarkets more energy-efficient and climate-friendly, focusing on the heating, cooling and refrigeration systems in food retail stores. Coordinated by SINTEF in Norway alongside a consortium of nine European partners, it set out to remove the non-technological barriers that slow efficient heating and cooling, to build knowledge and skills among supermarket staff, and to lay the groundwork for an EU Ecolabel for food stores.

Our roleCommunication and market outreach partner, as shecco — newsletters, brochures and awareness campaigns, plus knowledge transfer on natural refrigerants and climate-friendly store design.
